Senator AbdulFatai Omotayo Buhari, PhD, representing Oyo North Senatorial District, has reaffirmed the indispensable role of the media in democratic governance, describing journalism as a powerful force for accountability, nation-building, and institutional development.

The lawmaker made this assertion while receiving the newly inaugurated executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, led by its Chairman, Comrade Akeem Abbas, during a courtesy visit.
Welcoming the delegation, Senator Buhari stressed that the media remains a critical pillar of democracy, with enormous responsibility in shaping public opinion, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting transparency at all levels of governance. He charged the new NUJ leadership to uphold the highest ethical standards of the profession, emphasizing accuracy, balance, and professionalism in reportage.
“The responsibility of journalists goes beyond reporting events; it includes promoting peace, speaking truth to power, and holding all tiers of government accountable in the public interest,” the senator stated. “A responsible, independent, and ethical media is fundamental to democratic growth and social stability.”
Senator Buhari congratulated Comrade Akeem Abbas on his emergence as Chairman of the Oyo NUJ, expressing confidence in his capacity and that of the newly elected executives to lead the union to greater heights. He urged the leadership to foster unity within the union and to see their assignment as a call to service, partnership, and constructive engagement with government and other stakeholders for the overall development of Oyo State.
The Oyo North lawmaker further assured the NUJ executives of his continued support, guidance, and open-door policy, noting that collaboration between the media and government is essential for good governance and sustainable development.
In his remarks, Comrade Akeem Abbas appreciated the senator for the warm reception and his consistent support for press freedom and journalists’ welfare. He pledged that the new NUJ leadership would remain committed to ethical journalism, professional integrity, and responsible reporting in the discharge of its duties.
Senator Buhari concluded by wishing the Oyo State NUJ executives a successful, impactful, and productive tenure in service to the journalism profession and the people of Oyo State.
