The Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (O-ORBDA) has called for the protection of Nigeria’s rivers from pollution as part of the global efforts to safeguard vital water resources.
The call was made in a speech delivered by the Executive Director (Planning & Design), Engr. Adewale Adeoye, during the 2024 World Rivers Day celebration at the O-ORBDA Headquarters, Abeokuta, on Monday.
Adeoye listed the significance of rivers to human civilisation and their continued importance to modern-day communities.
He reminded Nigerians that rivers, as essential lifelines of the environment, have played critical role in the survival and livelihood of societies, noting that the earliest human settlements thrived along riverbanks.
“The theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Protect Our Rivers from Pollution,’ serves as a reminder of the increasing threats faced by rivers globally,” Adeoye said.
Adeoye identified various forms of pollution, including industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste, as major threats to river ecosystems.
He warned of the consequences of urbanisation, deforestation, and climate change, which have led to blocked waterways and reduced river capacity, often contributing to flood disasters.
Adeoye lauded the Federal Government for its efforts in raising awareness about river protection through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
He commended the ministry under the leadership of Prof. Joseph Utsev and Minister of State, Hon. Bello Muhammed Goronyo, for their dedication to preserving freshwater resources for future generations.
Adeoye urged citizens to avoid practices that harm rivers, such as dumping waste, open defecation, and discharging untreated sewage.
“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our rivers remain clean and healthy for the benefit of all,” he added.
The event marked an opportunity to educate the public on river conservation and foster a deeper communal connection with the environment.
