The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, concluded its monthly congress on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, with a strong call for journalists to prioritize fact-checking amidst increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The congress, held at the NUJ Press Centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan, was presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola.
In a communiqué issued after extensive deliberations, the union emphasized the critical need for journalists to verify information from politicians to avoid spreading fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
The congress also extended its condolences to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the people of Ibadan, and the royal family on the passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin 1).
Members offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
Praise for Olubadan Succession System and Call for Continued Peace.
The NUJ congress lauded the well-established system of ascendancy to the Olubadan throne, noting how it seamlessly designates the next monarch upon the demise of the incumbent.
Acknowledging the peaceful reign of the 43rd Olubadan, the union urged Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who has been put forward by the system as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland, to maintain and build upon the existing peace within the Ibadan Obas-in-Council and Ibadanland.
Furthermore, the congress commended the Oyo State Government for its sustained efforts in the ongoing construction of the Ibadan Circular Road and other road projects across the state.
Finally, the union advised its members to regularize their membership status with both the State and National Secretariats. This, they stressed, is crucial for members to qualify as delegates for this year’s Oyo NUJ council election.
