In an unusual and astonishing event, residents of Aarinoye Itesiwaju Market in Oyo State, Nigeria, witnessed a mentally ill woman give birth to a healthy baby boy without any medical assistance or prenatal care.

The unidentified woman, who had been living around the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) Oke Ogun FM station, delivered the baby at about 5 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the delivery was smooth, with both the baby and placenta arriving without complications.
What makes the case remarkable is that the baby appeared healthy despite the mother’s poor living conditions and questionable health practices.
According to community members, the woman survived largely on leftover food and junk during pregnancy and often drank unclean water from gutters rather than clean drinking water. She was also known to sleep on bare ground, even during heavy rains.
The delivery immediately drew the attention of local residents, who alerted the police. District Crime Officer (DCO), Obhakhoboh Joel, led the response team and ensured that both mother and child were taken to the hospital for proper care.
Despite her mental condition, people said, the woman had lived peacefully in the area, never posing any disturbance. The circumstances surrounding the pregnancy remain unclear, as neither her relatives nor the father of the child are known.
Currently, the newborn is under the custody of the Divisional Police Station, Itesiwaju Local Government, Otu, while efforts continue to trace the woman’s family. The police have called on community members with useful information about the woman’s relatives to come forward.
The incident has sparked conversations across the community and beyond, raising questions about resilience, maternal health, and the need for stronger social safety nets for vulnerable individuals.
