Former National President, Iseyin Development Union(IDU), and Ex-President of the National Union of Local Government Employees(NULGE), Comrade Bayo Raji has described the Governors’ strangulation of local government councils as an act which goes against the spirit of the law.
Iseyin-born legal luminary in Iseyin Local Government, Area of Oyo State condemned the tight grip of governors on local governments in their respective states, while speaking with acrossnigerianews.com
Raji, maintained that the governors had not allowed the local government councils to function in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The Legal Luminary, who had served in various capacities at the local government and rose to the highest echelon at that level said that the situation was not like this in his early years in the service.
He hinted that, as at the time he joined the service and up till about the last one or two regimes, the situation was far better in terms of allocations that were released to fund local projects and programmes.
He substantiated that the local government chairmen were given funds to initiate and execute projects suitable for their respective areas.
He lamented that, it was saddened that the third tier of government can not carry out any project as the governors tend to breath over their necks.
Adding that their allocations from the Federation Account are literally seized while pittance are only given to them.
