FG Boosts Power Supply in Oyo State with Commissioning of 132/33kV Mobile Substation in Ibadan

…as FGN Power Company CFO, Kola Olabiyi, Expresses Gratitude to Stakeholders

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the FGN Power Company in collaboration with Siemens Energy, has commissioned a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation at the Eleyele Transmission Substation in Ibadan, Oyo State.

This significant milestone—delivered under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI)—is designed to enhance electricity supply to Eleyele and its adjoining communities, including Apete, Ologuneru, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Sango, and Bodija.

The mobile substation is expected to increase transmission wheeling capacity by 50.4MW, providing more reliable and efficient power for homes and businesses in the region.

FG Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Power Delivery

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, OFR, FCA, described the project as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to energy reform.

“The commissioning of this mobile substation is a testament to our dedication to delivering reliable and sustainable power to the people of Oyo State and Nigerians at large,” he said.

He emphasized that the installation aligns with the government’s broader agenda to modernize Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and ease nationwide transmission constraints, with the PPI targeting over 1,300MW in added transmission capacity during its pilot phase.

Strategic Impact on Energy Access and Economic Growth

Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Annuwe, underscored the strategic importance of the Eleyele facility:

“This substation will not only improve power supply in Eleyele but also strengthen energy access in surrounding areas—empowering homes and commercial enterprises alike.”

He noted that the improved power supply is already fostering economic opportunities, citing the establishment of businesses such as Fan Milk in the Eleyele axis.

Broader Achievements of the Presidential Power Initiative

Since its launch, the Presidential Power Initiative has delivered measurable gains in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure:

Eight power transformers commissioned, adding 569.6MW to the national grid.

Six mobile substations (including Eleyele) deployed, contributing 302.4MW.

A seventh mobile substation at Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) is scheduled for energization, adding another 50.4MW.

Altogether, these installations represent an increase of 922.4MW in national transmission capacity under the PPI—supporting industrial hubs, educational institutions, and residential communities across Nigeria.

    Ongoing Projects in Oyo State

This commissioning builds on recent milestones in Oyo and neighboring states. In December 2024, two 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substations were commissioned at:

University of Ibadan – enhancing power to the institution, Samonda, Ajibode, and surrounding communities.

Saapade, Ogun State – further reinforcing transmission capacity in the region.

These two projects collectively added 100.8MW to the national grid.

In May 2025, the Federal Government approved two additional major energy projects for Oyo State:

    1. Revival of the Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant (Iseyin):
Originally commissioned in 1980, this plant will be upgraded from 6MW to 20MW under a 30-year public-private partnership (PPP).
    2. Construction of a 2x60MVA, 132/33kV substation in Lalupon/Ejioku, Lagelu LGA:
Designed to alleviate grid pressure and expand supply to Iwo Road, Monatan, Olodo, and nearby districts.

    FGN Power Company Appreciates Stakeholders

In closing, Hon. Kola Olabiyi, Chief Financial Officer of FGN Power Company, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the stakeholders involved in bringing the Eleyele project to life.

“On behalf of the Board, Management, and the entire team at FGN Power Company, I extend our deepest appreciation to all who contributed to this achievement—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; the Ministry of Power; NERC; Siemens Energy; and our tireless project teams.”

He described the Eleyele facility as a “symbol of commitment in action—bringing flexible, rapid-response power solutions to underserved communities.”

Olabiyi concluded by affirming that sustainable development is driven by collaboration, and reiterated the company’s focus on delivering world-class infrastructure that improves lives and powers Nigeria’s future.
