Ex Oyo Lawmaker, Alli Akinola Mourns Passing of HRM Oba Ismaila Olasunkanmi Abioye
The Iroko Kingdom is in mourning following the passing of its revered monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ismaila Olasunkanmi Abioye, who died on Friday, May 30, 2025. In accordance with Islamic rites, Oba Abioye will be laid to rest today, Saturday, May 31, 2025.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Hon (Chief) Alli Akinola Sikiru, the Aare Atunluse of Iroko Land and former Honourable Member of the Oyo State House of Assembly (2011-2015). Chief Sikiru, who was installed as Aare Atunluse in March 2021 in Iroko, spoke highly of the late Oba’s transformative reign.
“Oba Abioye’s time on the throne was marked by significant advancements and developments that profoundly impacted Iroko Land. His reign will be remembered for several groundbreaking achievements:
“Elevation to Obaship: Oba Abioye was the first monarch in Iroko’s history to be crowned as an Oba with a beaded crown. This marked a significant upgrade from the previous status of “Baale of Iroko,” elevating the traditional stool and bringing greater prestige to the kingdom”.
“Infrastructure Development: Under his leadership, the long-abandoned Old Ibadan-Oyo Road was rehabilitated and reopened. This crucial road, which had been left in disrepair for over 25 years, now serves to decongest the rapidly deteriorating New Ibadan-Oyo Expressway, significantly easing transportation for residents and commuters”.
“Educational Advancements: Oba Abioye was a strong advocate for education, and his efforts led to the establishment of two higher learning institutions in Iroko: a Foreign Link Campus (College of Education) and a University Satellite Campus. Additionally, a private Islamic College of Education was also established during his reign, providing more educational opportunities for the youth of Iroko and beyond.”
“Security and Justice System Improvements: The security infrastructure in Iroko also saw notable improvements, with the Police Post being upgraded to a full Police Station. Furthermore, the customary court was elevated to a Grade A Magistrate Court, enhancing the administration of justice within the kingdom.
Oba Ismaila Olasunkanmi Abioye’s reign will be etched in the history of Iroko Land as a period of unprecedented growth, modernization, and significant progress.”
“His vision and dedication have left an indelible mark on the community, and he will be deeply missed by his people” said Sikiru.
