Former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly and current Executive Chairman of Kajola Local Government Area, Hon. Akeem Olawale Mustapha popularly known as ‘Mugaty’ has strongly advocated comprehensive and professional tutelage as crucial for new lawmakers to grasp the intricacies of legislation. He emphasized that a solid mentorship foundation is key to effective legislative practice.

Speaking with some constituents at a popular petrol station in Okeho, Mugaty, who represented the Kajola State Constituency from 2019 to 2023, highlighted the steep learning curve inherent in legislative duties.
He underscored the need for incoming public officials to proactively seek guidance to excel in their roles.
“The concept of legislation would be better understood by a new lawmaker, provided he or she passes through a thorough and professional tutelage,” Mugaty stated, drawing from his own experiences.
He revealed that shortly after his election in 2019, he sought out Hon. Fatai Salam, the erstwhile lawmaker for Iseyin/Itesiwaju State Constituency, for mentorship.
Mugaty explained his decision to approach Hon. Salam, citing Salam’s extensive experience from serving in the 7th Oyo State House of Assembly (2011-2015) and his role as Chairman Parliamentary Caucus.
This background, Mugaty noted, provided Hon. Salam with invaluable knowledge and practical insights into the legislative process.
“My intimacy with Hon. Fatai Salam and readiness to learn had thoroughly shaped my horizon to have firm grasp and understanding of legislation and others that associate with it,” Mugaty recounted.
He credited this mentorship with significantly enhancing his comprehension of legislative nuances, enabling him to navigate the complexities of the hallowed chamber with greater confidence and competence.
Furthermore, Mugaty asserted that this foundational understanding, gained through dedicated tutelage, played a vital role in fostering strong relationships and seamless synergy with his fellow honorable colleagues, as well as stakeholders in the executive and judicial arms of government.
This collaborative approach, he believes, is essential for achieving good governance and delivering on public expectations.
In light of his personal journey and observations, Mugaty urged all aspirants seeking public offices to intensify their efforts in learning about the responsibilities and demands of such positions.
He stressed that a deeper understanding of their prospective roles would enable them to achieve results that would beat people’s imagination, ultimately leading to more impactful and effective public service.
Mugaty’s remarks serve as a vital call to action for aspiring leaders to prioritize preparedness and continuous learning in their pursuit of public office.
