Appeal has gone to all categories of drivers to avoid reckless driving on trunk A, B, and C roads, in order to prevent crashes capable of causing losses of lives and valuables.

This admonition was contained in a Communique issued at the end of monthly congress of Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Oyo State Council, the last one for 2023, held at the press centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Wednesday, 27 December, 2023.

The congress advised that, strategic stakeholders must work together to arrest the menace of incessant accidents that lead to lose of lives and valuables.

Below is the detail of the communique as succinctly penned by Drafting Committee led by Comrade Seye Ojo.

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF MONTHLY CONGRESS OF NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS(NUJ), OYO STATE COUNCIL, THE LAST ONE FOR 2023, HELD AT THE PRESS CENTRE, IYAGANKU, IBADAN, ON WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 27, 2023.

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, held its monthly congress on Wednesday December 27, 2023, which was the last one for 2023, at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan. It was presided over by the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Ademola Babalola.

The Congress deliberated extensively on a number of topical issues. After an exhaustive exchange of comments and views thereon, the congress resolved as follows:

    1. The Congress paid glowing tributes to the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), who reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday December 27, 2023. It commiserated with Akeredolu’s family, the people of Ondo State, and South West on his demise after a protracted battle with prostate cancer. It stated that Akeredolu spent major part of his life in Ibadan and also invested in the city, which made him a rare gem to both Oyo State and Ondo State, his home state.
    2. The Congress noted that Akeredolu played a significant role in the conceptualisation and formation of Western Nigeria Security Network, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps, which has cascaded down to state security networks in the South West, thereby serving as local police in the geo-politocal zone with a view to improving the security architecture of the zone.
    3. The Congress said Akeredolu remained the Chairman South West Governors’ Forum before his demise. He was very articulate and battled with the Federal Government till the formation of Amotekun Corps was finally settled in favour or the zone. The Council also commeded the gallant effort and bravery of Akeredolu against the onslaught of criminal herdsmen in the zone, which led to the attack on St Francis Catholic Cathedral in Owo, his hometown in Ondo State, during which bandits killed at least 40 worshippers on Sunday June 5, 2022.
    4. The Congress appealed to the South West Governors to immortalise Akeredolu by upholding his legacies, especially on the formation of Amotekun Corps.
    5. The Congress also congratulated the new govenor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was sworn in as the seventh civilian governor of the state on Wednesday December 27, 2023. The Congress, however, urged him to have a large heart in the onerous task of moving the Sunshine state forward.
    6. The Congress also took a cursory look at the security situation in Oyo State, and commended Governor Seyi Makinde of the state for leading by example, saying: “He is leading from the front, not from the rear. We note with delight that Governor Makinde led the security team in the state to give support to security agencies by combing forests on Oke-Ogun axis of the state in the night of Thursday December 21, 2023. This shows that he is concerned an bordered about elements of insecurity in the forest that spreads across eight among the 10 local government areas in Oke-Ogun zone of the state..”
    7. The Congress also commended personnel of security agencies that have been putting their lives on the line to secure the lives and property of residents of the state, stressing that: “Nevertheless, there are still more grounds to be covered.”
    8. The Congress also appealed to all categories of drivers to avoid reckless driving in order to prevent crashes capable of causing losses of lives and valuables on our Trunk A, B, and C Roads. It advised that strategic stakeholders must work together to arrest the menace.

    Communique Drafting Committee:

    1. Comrade Seye Ojo – (Chairman)
    2. Comrade Ismail Fasasi – Secretary
    3. Comrade Mosun Akinola – Member

    Sola Oladapo
