The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology Okeho (FUNATO) in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, is on the cusp of its official launch, marking a significant milestone for the region.
This highly anticipated institution, spearheaded by the Distinguished Senator Fatai Buhari representing Oyo North Senatorial District, received presidential assent from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognizing the vital need for a federal academic presence in Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo State.

The news of FUNATO’s establishment has been met with widespread jubilation across Okeho, Kajola, and the entire Oke-Ogun geopolitical zone. The community sees this as a rare blessing and a transformative opportunity for all residents.
Heartfelt appreciation has been extended to God almighty, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Professor Segun Gbadegesin, Senator Fatai Buhari, Hon. Olusola Ogunbode, Hon. Oyeshina Oyedeji, Hon. Musbau Azeez Action, and all others who played instrumental roles in making this academic dream a reality.
The people of Okeho, particularly the executives of Ègbé Omo Ibile Okeho under the leadership of Dr. Kasali Alarape Salau and the Okeho Development Youth Forum (ODYF), wasted no time in strategizing for the optimal presentation of the temporary site to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Education. While Okeho-Iganna was initially considered, but divine intervention led to Awoyemi Commercial High School being selected as the temporary site.
It is no doubt that the community has truly
taken the bull by the horns, demonstrating a profound commitment to preparing the site for the university’s imminent commencement. A dedicated project committee, comprising experts from academia, business, engineering, politics, and finance, has worked tirelessly since its inception, transforming the temporary site with remarkable efficiency.
Commendations are due to the exemplary efforts of individuals like Professor Jacob Babayemi, Dr. Kasali Alarape Salau, Engineer Ayoola, Mr. S.A. Ayorinde, Mr. Awojobi, Alhaji Musodiq Adele Alawiye, Mr. Sikiru Lawoya, Comrade Abdulwasii Ismail, and others whose impactful contributions have been progressively felt.
While significant progress has been made, there remain crucial areas requiring attention before the official launch. The roads leading to the temporary site are in urgent need of rehabilitation. It gladdens my heart to announce that, Hon. (Barr.) Akeem Olawale Mustapha MUGATY, the local government chairman, has commendably pledged to implement palliative measures to ensure free and easy access for students, staff, and the general public.
However, the university’s full operational status hinges on the official visit and assessment by both the NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education as this crucial step is expected to materialize in the near future.
As the official launch approaches, it is imperative that all stakeholders collaborate to ensure a warm reception and comfortable accommodation for incoming students, staff, and other visitors.
To ensure the sustainable growth and positive integration of FUNATO within the community, it is vital to address potential challenges:
Affordable Accommodation: Landlords and landladies are urged to refrain from imposing exorbitant house rents, which could deter newcomers and create unnecessary bottlenecks for those seeking to reside in the community.
Fair Pricing of Goods and Services: Market women and business owners are encouraged to maintain affordable prices for goods and services. While profit is a legitimate objective, excessive gains should be avoided to ensure the comfort and well-being of the new customers.
Enhanced Security: While the atmosphere is generally peaceful, the security of lives and properties should be given heightened attention to guarantee a safe and secure environment for all.
FUNATO’s establishment unequivocally thrusts Okeho and Kajola Local Government onto the national and international stage. It is crucial that any action that could tarnish this newfound image should be meticulously avoided. By working together, the community can ensure that FUNATO not only thrives as a center of academic excellence but also serves as a catalyst for socio-economic development in the entire Oke-Ogun region.
