The Executive Chairman/CEO of Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has impounded 28 Micras, 3 commercial Buses, 17 Motorcycles, and private vehicles playing one-way, operating illegal garages, and causing serious road obstructions on major roads in Ibadan.
The Executive Chairman/CEO of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd) made this known in an interview with journalists after one of the authority’s operations in Ibadan, the state capital.
The operation was
specifically directed to target one-way drivers, traffic light violators, and illegal garages that had been a persistent source of congestion and inconvenience for road users, beginning from Iwo road under-bridge to Ojoo, Sango, Mokola, Agodi-Gate, ending at Idi-ape traffic light junction, Ibadan saw the agency’s officials arresting the traffic law offenders.
Adekoya (rtd) while speaking, said that OYRTMA had the responsibility of maintaining the state’s road traffic laws, as well as maintaining orderliness and control in the road traffic system of the state.
” Today makes it 1 year in office. I was appointed as the executive chairman of Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), and instead of sitting in the comfort of my office, we came out to evaluate our enforcement drive. One of the strategies for road management all over the world is enforcement.
” So what we have done today, we started from secretariat to gate and we have apprehended a lot of one-way infractions, we have apprehended unlawful parking, we have equally apprehended other infractions.
He said, the authority didn’t just go on the road to look for offenders, added that they sensitize and educate residents on dangers attached to traffic laws violating
” We take our awareness campaign to the garages and market places, I have been in many stations, enlightening the populace about the need for them to obey traffic laws, so it is a sad thing to note that people still violate one-way, the danger is so high because it endangers the lives of the pedestrians and even the motorists themselves, especially in this EMBER month because a lot of people are on the road for one thing or the other. More functions are fixed for this period, and therefore, there will be a lot of movements, so there is a need to exercise caution.
Adekoya (rtd), who frowns at the offenders for violations of rules, said his office will not relent in the enforcement of law and order of traffic rules in the state.
” Even when we have the parking space, they don’t use it, they still come on the road. At Sango today, they have a parking space, but they don’t use it. Look at what the government has spent on the improvement of the Gate and its parking spaces; most of the commercial drivers are hell-bent on using the facilities. ORTYMA will continue with the sanity on our roads.
Now the government has established a tribunal to trial offenders, and before you know it, some people will find themselves in prisons, and our law is going through amendment phase where we will have an enhanced punishment for violators of our traffic laws,” ORTYMA chairman said.
The ORTYMA chairman, thereafter advised motorists to shun any act of lawlessness and always obey traffic laws in the state.
