A contentious zoning debate has ignited within the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pitting gubernatorial aspirants from Ogbomoso against those from the Oke-Ogun region. At the heart of the dispute is the allocation of the party’s gubernatorial ticket for the upcoming election.

Engr. Remi Olaniyan, a former deputy governor and prominent aspirant from Oke-Ogun, has publicly urged aspirants from Ogbomoso to concede the nomination, emphasizing the region’s 25-year wait for gubernatorial representation. Speaking to journalists in Iseyin, Olaniyan argued that equity, fairness and justice demand the APC prioritizes Oke-Ogun in the selection process.
“The Oke-Ogun zone has been patiently waiting for its turn to produce a governor,” Olaniyan stated. “It is the only region within Oyo State that has yet to achieve this, despite its significant population and contributions to the state.”
Olaniyan’s appeal underscored a historical perspective, acknowledging Ogbomoso’s established political legacy and its distinction of having previously produced a governor. However, he stressed the unique position of Oke-Ogun as the sole region lacking this representation.
The burgeoning dispute highlights the delicate balance the APC must strike between regional representation and political strategy as it prepares for the crucial gubernatorial election. Party stakeholders are now tasked with navigating these competing demands to maintain unity and ensure electoral success. The outcome of this zoning debate is expected to significantly impact the political landscape of Oyo State.
