Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, launched a scathing attack on Senator Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday, labeling him as the “biggest and most destructive threat” to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The criticism stems from their clash during the APC primaries in 2019 when Oshiomhole was the national chairman of the party.
The confrontation and infernal wrangling between Amosun and Oshiomhole intensified during the disputed governorship primary in Ogun State, which resulted in the victory of Dapo Abiodun, who was favoured over Amosun’s preferred candidate, Adekunle Akinlade.
A Oshiomhole publicly revealed names Of those who removed him As APC National Chairman In The Presence Of The Big Names Involved
The discord originated in October 2018 when two governorship candidates emerged in Ogun State. The panel led by Mohammed Indabawa, sent by the APC National Working Committee, declared Abiodun as the winner, while the state executive led by Derin Adebiyi announced Akinlade as the victor of another primary it conducted.
The aftermath of the 2019 APC primaries in Ogun State led to a series of bitter accusations and counter-allegations. Amosun’s camp expressed bitterness, claiming that the Indabawa-panel did not conduct any primary, while the NWC questioned the Adeniyi-led executive’s legitimacy in conducting a primary and declaring Akinlade the winner.
The National Working Committee, under the leadership of Oshiomhole, later supported Abiodun against Amosun’s preferred candidate, intensifying the strain in the relationship between the former governors.
Oshiomhole revisited the 2019 drama during a book launch on Tuesday, hinting that the party spent N2.4 billion to win governorship elections in Kwara, Imo, and Ogun State. He also mentioned that the party invested N800 million in the Taraba State governorship election, which they lost.
In response, Amosun issued a statement on Wednesday, criticizing Oshiomhole for his narrative filled with lies. Amosun asserted that the APC conducted the worst primaries in Nigeria’s history under Oshiomhole’s leadership, labeling him as “APC’s biggest, most destructive threat.”
“It is not in doubt that I have participated fully in the formation and sustenance of our party, the APC, and I can boldly say that the party under Adams Oshiomhole conducted one of the worst primaries in the history of Nigeria’s contemporary politics and ended up shopping for his own enemies, leading to his eventual removal as Chairman of our party. Nigerians should not be in a hurry to forget the allegations that preceded the conduct of those primaries and his eventual invitation by the Department of State Service, DSS, to clarify certain grave allegations.
“If anyone was in doubt that Senator Oshiomhole posed the biggest and most destructive threat to the existence of the APC at that time, and the party’s best bet was to dispose of a canon folder that he was and unfortunately still is, his utterances and grandstanding yesterday at an occasion to find solutions to our democratic and party challenges, would have cleared such mindset,” he said.
